Even though the figures released last week showed New Jersey's unemployment rate trending downward at 9.6 percent, it remains slightly higher than the national rate of 9.5 percent. The economy may be showing signs of improvement in some sectors, but nearly 14.6 million Americans are still out of work.Extending benefits is not a Democratic issue or a Republican issue. It is a national issue that affects formerly working Americans across a wide range of fields, pay scales and political persuasions.
Majority of Americans favors extending unemployment benefits to the jobless; economists insist that it's necessary to preserve the country's fragile recovery.
The Senate should end these political games once and for all and vote to extend these benefits. The House has already passed an unemployment-benefits extension, as the Senate's version is different, it must do it again.
The House is expected to approve the Senate's version Wednesday and send it to Mr. Obama for his signature
